Today I went to a private viewing of the Juno Calypso exhibition at 71a gallery in Leonard street. She is a London based artist who makes self portraits, in which she performs as her alter ego Joyce. In her work she ‘explores the modern rituals of seduction and beauty, and the laboured construction of femininity’. The images in this exhibition were actually taken in a Pennsylvanian honeymoon hotel, where see stayed alone for a week to produce these rather unsettling photographic images as well as a video.
It was only a small exhibition, but I really enjoyed it and loved the concept behind the images. I found it interesting how she used these pastel, sugar coated colours, but still managed to create the sense of something darker and despair. It was also great to see the kitsch images, newspaper cuttings and posters along with photos, which actually added to the unsettling nature of the exhibition. Her work actually reminded me a lot of Cindy Sherman, who of course is known for her conceptual self-portraits where she completely disguises herself in a range of costumes. She has also been compared a lot of Gillian Wearing.
Juno Calypso has already had a lot of success since graduating from the London College of communication in 2012. Her work has since been exhibited in London, New York and Miami, alongside features in The British Journal of Photography, The Guardian, Dazed & Confused, The Sunday Times, VICE and The Huffington Post. She also won the Visitor Vote at the 2013 Catlin Art Prize.
The exhibition will be open to the public on the 2nd October till 4th October.
